Second visit to Kyzylsu

Second visit to Kyzylsu

Members of research cluster 3, ‘Glaciers, Snow and Hydrology’, successfully completed their second visit to Kyzylsu since PAMIR started. This time, the joint Tajik-Swiss expedition team also included several artists, working on innovative Art-Science collaborations funded by PolARTS grants.

The weather provided much better working conditions than during the previous visit to the region, and the group was able to install a new meteorological station at almost 4000m a.s.l., to re-drill ablation stakes in the glacier ablation area as well as revisit many of the previously installed meterological and hydrological stations.

Members of the group also had a chance to visit Khorog (GBAO region) including the campus of the University of Central Asia which provided new opportunities for outreach and collaboration.

Unexpectedly, the expedition members noticed that mobile phone coverage was available in this location such that next year they will try to install a SIM card for data transmission and avoid the steep hike after that! © Achille Jouberton
